The Sandpaper Globe has a sandpaper surface representing land and a smooth surface representing water. The wooden base holds the globe at a 23° angle, the same as the earth’s axis in relation to the sun.

Purpose
  • To Be Able to Identify Land and Water on a Globe

Presentation
  • Retrieve the sandpaper globe and place it on the table. 
  • Wash your hands, and sensitive your hands.
  • Sit at the table with the globe.
  • “This is a globe and this is what the earth looks like from really far away. For example, if you were in a spaceship, this is what the earth would look like from in the spaceship.” 
  • Touch a land part/or sandpaper part. “Land”
  • Let the child touch. 
  • Then touch a water part/or smooth part. “Water.”
  • Let the child touch. 
  • Continue pointing out land and water on the globe, saying the names of both as you touch them. Do all the way around the world. 
  • Then continue the three period lesson with “land” and “water” on the globe. 
  • Ask the child to put their fingers on land. Ask the child to put their fingers on water.
  • Then place your fingers on land, and ask the child what it is. 
  • Then place your fingers on water, and ask the child what it is. 
  • To clean-up, carry the globe back to the shelf.
