The Story Genre Label Matching Cards introduce children to common vocabulary used when talking about stories. The printable contains two sets of individual cards: genre and story-type labels with darker sage borders, and simple definition cards with lighter sage borders. Children read each label, find the definition that matches its meaning, and then use the control sheet for self-correction.
The material includes the following terms: adventure story, historical story, fantasy story, mystery story, detective story, real-life story, imaginary world, and another culture. The definitions are intentionally written in simple language to make the concepts easier for developing readers to understand.
This activity can support reading comprehension, vocabulary development, classification, and independent learning. It works well as a follow-up to reading a story, as part of a language shelf, or when introducing children to the vocabulary they may encounter in reading-comprehension work.
How to use
- Print the material on cardstock for greater durability and cut out the individual cards along the colored frames.
- Place the darker genre labels in a column or row.
- Invite the child to read each lighter definition card and place it beside the matching label.
- Once all pairs have been completed, the child can compare the work with the included control sheet.
